Beach Camping iN Galveston, TX

#ZMilesBeach
We took an impromptu trip to Galveston which turned in to us camping on the beach. If you haven't  done this, I HIGHLY recommend you do it pronto! In this post I'll share the location, the stuff we bought at Walmart, the stuff I wish we bought, & a few tips.
Let's cut right to the chase- the location (because let's be honest- that's why you're reading this)
Location: 10202 Bluewater Hwy, Freeport, TX 77541
While Cody was in Walmart buying our supplies, I was in the truck googling, "Free beach camping in Galveston". I found a few youtube videos and a few Google "check-ins, " and none of them really gave me an address but all suggested Surfside Beach. After navigating to Surfside's official website and reading through their rules & regulations, I determined that the address I provided for you, was the one for us. Your GPS will should take you to Public Beach Access Road 5, which is near a complex named, "Peregrine Townhomes." (You could even use the townhomes' address)  *Heads up! There is a beach on google that has 248+ reviews named, "Surfside (Free) Beach,"  this is NOT that location.
Rules: This is downloaded straight from Surfside's website (and how I found our location)

What We Bought & Brought

  • Tent - $25 | so SUPER easy to set up that Cody was able to do it in 13 mph wind
  • Air Mattress - $30 | full size | fit both of us with both dogs perfectly
  • Sheet Set - $15 | light blue | super soft (I love that Cody matched the sheets to our cooler)
  • Quilt Top Cover - $12  | light blue | I wish we had 2!  It got really cold at night
  • Mini grill - $25 | It cooked hot dogs and then converted in to a fire pit
  • Coleman Cooler - $99 | already had | FYI: we bought ours when it was on sale
  • Lawn Chairs - $49 | already had | they discontinued the chairs you see here that have cup holders (silly decision if you ask me), but all the chairs on their site are all awesome!
  • Dog cooling Bandanas - $25 | psst: use code LASHESLOVE to receive 20% your ENTIRE order | not only do they match their collar & leash, but they really do cool them down
  • Dog LED Collar Light - $6 | these are a must! It's nice looking out and seeing two glowing lights running around instead of trying to get your eyes to adjust to see doggie silhouettes
  • Tarp - n/a Cody always has this in the bed of his truck (I think we're going to bring an old rug with us next time too - won't blow as much)
  • Beach Towels
  • Food & Booze (duh)
What I Wish We Had:
  • A battery operated lantern (because it gets real dark y'all)
  • Plates (yep, we ate hot dogs with no plates)
  • Tiki torches (for more light + warmth)
  • Reflectors (because there was light traffic)
  • S'mores (because you can't have a fire without roasting marshmallows)
Tips & Tidbits:
  • Park next to new construction!  Why?  There's a 99% chance a porta potty will be close by. I'm sure this isn't allowed, so if this is illegal or frowned upon, then I am in no way condoning this...
  • If you drive through Galveston, bring $2 in change for the random tollbooth on the bridge
  • The first question I got after, "what's the address,' was, "Did you feel safe?" - Well actually it was, "It wasn’t scary overnight?" At first it caught me off guard, but I totally get it. Quick answer?  We felt 100% safe.  It's 2 miles of beach and everyone does a great job being well spaced out, so you basically have a spot all to yourself. There was a rager (party) happening about a mile down so there was some light traffic late into the night/early in the morning; This is why I want to bring reflectors or cones- I was more worried about drunk people running us over than afraid of "druggies robbing me." PS: the waves & wind drown out all sound, so you don't have to worry about noise- You WILL sleep soundly
  • Do NOT burn the Christmas trees - I know it says it on the rules, but I felt the need to repeat it
  • One of my favorite things about this quick trip was waking up and watching the sunrise over the water.  No one else was around. It felt like our very own Heaven
This was our first time taking The Mick to the beach, and since we adopted him last year, we have no idea if he's ever been before, but I think it's safe to say that he LOVED it!  I've watched this video of the wind blowing his ears back about 23 times.  I can't with his cute Yoda self!
Have you camped on the beach? Share your experience & any tips you have in the comments!
